How to work with natural horn frames
Preface
Working with buffalo horn frames is not difficult, but you have to take more care, a sure instinct and a little more time than usual.
The buffalo horn itself is not so easy to bend by heating as normal acetate. Due to the structure of the horn the frame can crack if not treated the right way.
Selection of the Optical lens
We recommend strongly to sell only plastic lenses, so the natural comfort and lightness of the buffalo horn frame are supported. In general you should sell aspheric lenses. It’s almost impossible to bend the buffalo horn into another shape for the normal optician.
Glazing of Full rim Frames
Please cut the plastic lenses 0.2 to 0.3 mm smaller than usual.
The lenses have to be so small, that you could insert them nearly without heating.
Please take care of bevelling all the edges of the lens, specially the top! Otherwise the frame will crack after some time. The top of the lens works like an ax and the frame will split up.
Put the heating to the highest level. Then heat the material slowly. Hold it into the heating for 30-40 seconds, put away for same time, hold it into the heating again. Do so five to six times, so the material becomes so hot you cannot touch it! Then insert the lens smoothly and lengthwise.
DO NOT PRESS TOO MUCH!
Glazing of Nylor Frames
With the Nylor frames you should cut the lens + 0.1 mm bigger, so you can make a normal facette on the top, where the lens is inserted into the frames. The width of the groove shall be 0.8 mm and the deep 0.6mm.
So you can be sure the lens fits exactly into the frame. Do not put the frame under too much tension!
Fitting at the temples/endings
When selling the buffalo horn frame please have a closer look at the endings. If the temples are too long, you can shorten them directly before inserting the lenses. You can do this like with an acetate frame (cutting, sanding and polishing) You will see, that it much easier so polish Buffalo Horn than acetate.
If it is so hot, you cannot touch it, please use a cloth or towel to bend. Hold it in position till it’s colder- like OPTYL!
If the material is not hot enough, it can crack!
If you bend too much, the material gets rough. You can easily sand and polish it then.
Please rub some protection cream onto that point then, so the material becomes smooth again.
ALWAYS USE ENOUGH HEAT BEFORE BENDING!!!!!
Comfortable wearing
When choosing the frame, beware of choosing the correct size. Buffalo horn cannot be enlarged, it will crack.
If you have to file the temple connecting to the front to make it fit to the customers head, be careful. The temples have a very comfortable spring hinge that opens quite wide. If you file too much, there will be a gap between the front and the temple. The spring hinge still will work properly.
Special Tools
There are no special tools required for the buffalo horn frames. The heating should be able to produce high temperatures.
Finally
At the end you should put the protection cream onto the frame, especially onto the heated and bended places. Then you use a dry tissue to wipe the rest off. This makes the buffalo horn smooth again.
