races The buffalo belongs to a large group of cattle, which is subdivided into bisons and buffaloes. They originate from the wild buffalo of which there are two types: the African and the Asian wild buffalo. The Indian wild buffalo bred from these types acclimatized itself to the Indian sub-continent as early as 4000 years ago. |
The domesticated wild buffalo was named water buffalo (bubalus bubalis). The further-bred Indian water buffalo (bubalus arnee) is basically the race preceding all water buffalo races currently existing. These are sub-divided into two main race groups: 1. Swamp buffalos, which are mainly used as working animals 2. River buffalos, which are used for milk and meat production |
